John Ackerly, President, Alliance for Green Heat
John Ackerly is the President of the Alliance for Green Heat, a non-profit that promotes cleaner and more efficient residential biomass heating, with a strong focus on low and middle-income families. Previously, Mr. Ackerly was the President of the International Campaign for Tibet and worked with many human rights and environmental groups in Washington, DC.
He attended Dartmouth College and American University Law School. He is an avid rock climber, skier, outdoorsman and wood stove aficionado. He lives in Takoma Park, Maryland with his wife Nina Smith and son Sammy. |

Scott Nichols, President, Tarm Biomass
Scott Nichols graduated with B.S. in Law and Public Policy from the School of Management at Syracuse University in 1993. From 1995 to 2006 Mr. Nichols assisted with operations of Tarm Biomass, Inc. a family run company, importing and distributing biomass boilers for three European manufacturers. Since 2006 he is the owner of Tarm Biomass, Inc. He ran an active hearth shop in Lyme, NH from 1995-2005, with a predominant number of sales in wood and wood pellet burning appliances.
Mr. Nichols has been active in the Heating the Northeast Conference Steering Committee in 2009 and 2010. |

Larry Brockman, Team Leader - Residential Wood Smoke, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Larry Brockman, a graduate of Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs, currently works for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Air Quality in Research Triangle Park, NC as EPA’s Residential Wood Smoke Reduction Initiative (Initiative) Team Lead. The Initiative includes EPA’s Voluntary Fireplace and Hydronic Heater (Outdoor wood boiler) programs, the Great American Wood Stove Changeout campaign and the Burn Wise education campaign.
Over the last 6 years Mr. Brockman has worked in partnership with the hearth industry, state, local and tribal government and other organizations on more than a dozen wood stove changeout projects aimed at facilitating the upgrade of old, dirty, inefficient wood stoves and fireplaces with more energy efficient, clean burning hearth appliances, like EPA-certified stoves, wood pellet stoves and gas stoves. |

Charlie Niebling, General Manger, New England Wood Pellet
Mr. Niebling is responsible for sales, wood procurement for the company’s three plants, corporate communications, and government and public affairs. From 1997 to 2005, he was vice president for policy and land management with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, a non-profit land conservation and environmental advocacy organization. Prior to assuming this position, he was a consultant for two years in the firm Innovative Natural Resource Solutions, specializing in natural resource policy, research, advocacy and public relations for corporate, government and non-profit clients.
From 1987 to 1995, Mr. Niebling served as executive director of the New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association, the state’s forest landowner and forest industry trade organization. From 1984 to 1987 he worked as a research biologist with the U.S. Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Forest & Range Experiment Station in Berkeley, CA. He holds forestry degrees from the University of Vermont (BS) and the Pennsylvania State University (MS), and is a licensed professional forester.
