This Department of Energy publication offers background helpful to wood energy equipment makers considering whether to enter the commercial class building market. Data is provided on numbers of buildings and floor space that will require renovation, types of energy used and the legal basis demanding that energy system updates be made. Also included is information on the character of each building type, energy consumption patterns and lists of significant owners/developers in each area and additional sources of background research on the topic.

America’s bio-thermal industry has been held back partly because the technology was undervalued for its potential contribution and for the advancement making it more than a back yard craft. The best modern wood thermal equipment uses digital controls, advanced combustion technologies and thermal storage principles for which even oil and gas service technicians are unprepared. Likewise, sustainable fuel management requires knowledge at forest, harvest, transport and storage/handling stages which have been unaddressed by American secondary education and university systems alike. The report was prepared to define the sets of skills required by those working at all levels and in all occupations within the embryonic biomass energy sector. We know of no similar effort anywhere in the US; this document was developed in the UK which has moved ahead of the United States in bio-thermal energy development over the past decade. Manufacturers will benefit from understanding and using the ideas presented here in working with advocates to broaden awareness about bio-thermal energy as a source of skilled, long term green collar employment that is paid for by just part of the savings in the cost of fuel wood vs. oil or gas. Another benefit for manufacturers is a clear expression of the truth that with few exceptions there is an almost total lack of training provision for the sector. That lack of training opportunity within the sector at a national level (true in the U.S. as well as the UK) represents a serious threat to what could be America’s most sustainable emerging biomass energy technology. The study concludes with recommendations for the development of a range of training courses and seminars, and with the development and implementation of a 14 point action plan.

It was published to help people who plan new public buildings, others who influence energy system choices and HVAC operators including engineers. The user friendly approach suggests the benefit of addressing early all the issues making introduction of wood thermal energy to commercial class customers a larger challenge than were sales to homeowners and sawmill or cabinet shop manager who were significant in the traditional U.S. market. The content addresses typical concerns with up to date information on options in wood fuel supply, technologies available, issues to consider and case studies of successful systems.
