BTEC has estimated that more than 12.5 million homes and businesses in the Midwest are not connected to natural gas lines and that supplying just 15% of the area’s thermal energy from renewable sources would create 13,170 direct jobs in the region and thousands more indirect jobs. BTEC is partnering with Heating the Midwest (HTM) in accomplishing our mission in these states. T.J. Morice of TNT Ventures LLC and a BTEC Director, is BTEC’s main liaison and representative for the region.
Activities
- Policy and regulatory advocacy at the local, state, and regional levels
- Development, promotion, and distribution of providing energy in the Mid-West with our “Heating the Midwest with Renewable Biomass” vision for 2025
- Outreach to allied groups and organizations to expand network of biomass thermal advocates in the Mid-West
- Identification and prioritization of key policy, regulatory and public relations issues facing the biomass thermal industry
- Conduct research to provide information and data collection to assist/influence policy makers, regulators, and even future customers.
- Coordination of advocacy to federal delegations on key issues in Washington
- “Best ideas” sharing across region
- News, industry, conference, and grant opportunity updates for the region
Introduction
BTEC is proud to announce its collaboration with four other organizations in a call for an American Revolution to domestically produce the thermal energy consumed in the Midwestern states. We propose that 15% of all thermal energy requirements in the Midwest are met with renewable energy resources by the year 2025.
Vision
Key Findings and Conclusions of the Report
If achieved, this vision will:
- Achieve 15% of all thermal energy from renewables by 2025
- Reduce 1.01 billion gallons of propane and 278 million gallons of heating oil
- Reinvest $2.2 billion into the Midwest economy
- Create 13,170 jobs from the expansion of the thermal biomass industry and up to 210,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs from annual energy savings and the effects of no longer exporting heating fuel money from the region
- Supply 17.2 million green tons of sustainable woody and agricultural biomass for thermal energy and combined heat and power by 2025
- 12,630,950 homes and businesses are not connected to low-cost natural gas
- Improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gases, and enhance forest management
- Vitalize communities through rural economic opportunities, new industry and innovation
