In the United States, there are widely adopted technical standards for nearly every heating fuel – natural gas, oil, propane, wood pellets – but, until recently, not wood chips.
A wood chip heating fuel quality standard is essential to improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of wood chip heating systems and enhance the technical credibility and market confidence that will help expand the wood chip heating market.
In 2016, the Biomass Energy Resource Center, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, Biomass Thermal Energy Council, and Innovative Natural Resource Solutions, LLC spearheaded an initiative to develop a national wood chip heating fuel quality standard following the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) protocol. After in-depth review and discussion, it was decided to nationally adopt an existing international standard and modify it to be applicable to the U.S. market. This standard is entitled: ANSI/ASABE AD17225-4:2014 FEB2018 Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes — Part 4: Graded wood chips. The modifications to the existing international standard were developed over 18 months and involved several rounds of official voting, revisions, and rigorous stakeholder review and input.
